PortCitySafari, sixth edition of the Going Public project, takes us on a journey through some of the most important European and Mediterranean port cities. Setting off in Bristol, first stop the exhibition Port City. On Mobility and Exchange, then on the site-specific projects created for the 10°Istanbul and 1°Athens Biennials, PortCitySafari investigates the cities of Rotterdam, Tangier, Palermo, Marseille and Liverpool, which participates through researches, exhibitions and workshops organised by arts centres and universities. The project highlights various investigations into the subjects of mobility, commerce, productivity, contemporary slavery of port cities, all documented in this new volume.
To mark the end of the tour, a bilingual 240 pages colour volume has been published by Silvana Editoriale (Milano), recounting a journey through Art and port cities carried out by about 40 artists and theorists. The book documents the discussion phases, the choice of the artists, the commissions and the projects produced. It documents a reflection of such crucial themes as migration, the free market, the transformations of the port areas and their relationship with the city and its inhabitants.
This is a rare publication investigating various aspects of port cities through the eyes of artists as a method of critical research and discussion on contemporary art.
The project received the Price Cultura 2007: It has been supported by The J.F. Costopoulos Foundation, Fondazione Cassa Risparmio Modena, Arnolfini, Bristol. Cultural Office Europe.
